NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- After a 22-year run at New Fairfield High School, principal Mariana Coelho will retire at the end of the school year, The News-Times said.

Coelho gave a "heartfelt speech" at a school board meeting, where she got a standing ovation, according to the article.

The Southbury resident said it was a difficult decision to "leave her students." 

“I hope that they look back and realize I wanted the best for them,” Coelho she reportedly said, according to the newspaper.

Colho first worked at the high school in 1982 as a business teachers. She left to work at Aetna and a medical practice for 11 years, then returned the article says.
