New Fairfield Rep. Smith Praises New Slow-No-Wake Zones In Squantz Pond

NEW FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The waters on Candlewood Lake will be calmer after revised Slow-No-Wake regulations were approved by the state legislature’s Regulation Review Committee, state Rep. Rich Smith said.

These new regulations increase the existing no-wake zones in Squantz Pond and Lattins Cove to over double their original size, said Smith, who represents New Fairfield, Sherman, New Milford and Danbury.

“The new regulations will create a much safer environment for boaters, swimmers and residents along the shoreline,” said Smith (R-108), “I am very pleased that the new regulations were approved.”

Residents began to petition the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection last June when the smaller, 1,000-foot no-wake zones proved to be ineffective for reducing wake cast by watercraft entering and leaving launch sites.

The no-wake zone buoys are mapped and placed by the DEEP. In order for the location of those buoys to change, existing regulations had to be amended.
