Brookfield's Insurance To Cover GOP Officials Targeted In Rights Suit

BROOKFIELD, CONN. -- Legal bills amassed by several Republican Party officials in Brookfield will be paid for by the town’s insurance company, according to multiple media reports.

Brookfield's insurance company has agreed to cover the legal expenses of four men sued by resident Jane Miller, who claims her constitutional rights were violated when she was ousted from the town's Republican Party.

The Connecticut Interlocal Risk Management Agency, a taxpayer-funded liability insurance program, has agreed to cover former registrar of voters Tom Dunkerton, town Selectman Marty Flynn, former town GOP Chairman Matt Grimes and former Vice Chairman George Walker, The Danbury News-Times and wlad.com reported.

The four men had been targeted in a $1 million federal lawsuit brought by Jane Miller after she was ousted from the party apparently in retaliation for her running for the town’s Finance Board on the Democratic ticket in 2013, The Danbury News-Times reported.

Miller, who re-registered as a Republican after she lost the election, claimed in her suit that her constitutional rights had been violated, The Danbury News-Times story said.

One of the town’s Democratic first selectmen has argued that the legal bills are not a public concern and shouldn’t be subsidized by taxpayers, wlad.com reported.
