Hartford County resident David Latino, age 49, of Southington, was arrested on Thursday, Oct. 14, after barricading himself in the carrier Motor Lodge, in Newington, authorities said.
The incident began around 4:30 p.m., when Plainville Police detectives tracked Latino from a bank robbery that had occurred in Plainville earlier in the day to the Carrier Motor Lodge located at 2660 Berlin Turnpike, according to Lieutenant Nicholas Miano, of the Newington Police Department.
When police arrived on the scene, the room where Latino was believed to be staying was located. As officers approached the room, Latino opened the door and upon seeing the officers quickly shut the door, Miano said.
It was determined that Latino had a female acquaintance in the room with him.
A containment perimeter was established. The Newington Police Department Emergency Response Team and Crisis Negotiators responded. After a few hours of negotiating with Latino, the female acquaintance was allowed to leave the room, police said.
Negotiations continued and there was concern that Latino may be experiencing a medical emergency. Members of the Emergency Response Team made entry into the room where they located Latino unconscious, Miano said.
Latino was transported by ambulance to Hartford Hospital for treatment.
Upon release from the hospital, he was charged with kidnapping and interfering with a police officer.
His bond was set at $250,000.
Latino faces additional charges in Plainville.
