With this event, Brookfield is joining with several police departments across the country in hosting a Coffee with a Cop program to invite residents to meet face-to-face with local police.
The Oct. 8 coffee talk is planned for 8-10:30 a.m. at Brookfield Deli and Catering, 782 Federal Road, Brookfield. Officers are promising no agendas and no speeches. Just coffee and conversation.
"We are hoping with a few cups of coffee, we can break down any barriers that stand between our uniformed officers and the community we're sworn to protect," reads the Facebook announcement. "We want to make sure everyone is comfortable approaching our officers."
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the national movement started in 2011 when officers in Hawthorne, Calif., met with residents over coffee. Now towns in almost all states across the nation host a Coffee with a Cop event.
A national training program was established for departments interested in starting the program in their areas, and a first national event was held in 2014. The informal coffee meetings are considered a natural outreach of the community policing concept that encourages officers to get to know those they serve.
