BROOKFIELD, Conn. – Joseph A Howells, of Brookfield, died Wednesday, June 1. He was 86.
He was a longtime resident of Brookfield, and was the husband of the late Rita C. Howells for 59 years.
Born June 30, 1929, in South Philadelphia, he was an electrical engineer. He was a graduate of Drexel University, where he obtained both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering, physics and biomedical engineering. He later obtained his doctorate from California Coast University in mathematical modeling and microprocessor programming.
Among his many professional achievements, he is listed on 11 U.S. patents, was listed in “Who’s Who in Technology” in 1980 and 1981, and was the recipient of the Drexel Honor Society “Man of the Year" award in 1978. After teaching radar school in the Army, he began his career in 1952 with RCA. In 1963, he was the lead engineer for the installation of computer systems for controlling electric power stations at the Bergen Generating Station in New Jersey, and at the Moses Niagara Generating Station in New York.
After retirement, he taught physics and computer science at Western Connecticut State University and served as an examination proctor for MENSA, of which he he was a member. An avid private pilot, he served as an FAA accident prevention counselor and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol.
He is survived by his two remaining children, Richard J. Howells of Brookfield, and Jeanette S. Howells of Bethlehem, Pa.; three grandchildren, Tameika Hudson, Franklin Hudson III, and LaFina Hudson-Widdick, all of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and his three great-grandchildren, Jordan Tounds, William IV, (Liam) Widdick and Vasche Hudson, all of Port St. Lucie.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his daughter, Joan Marie; and brother, William.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to St. Joseph’s Church, 163 Whisconier Road, Brookfield , CT 06804. A memorial Mass will be celebrated in Saint Joseph Church, Brookfield, at a later date and time.
