New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said that beginning Monday, Aug. 9, masks will be required indoors at all establishments including bars, restaurants, theaters and more, WTNH reported.

Elicker said the city is experiencing an increase in cases driven by the highly transmissible delta variant. He said the variant now accounts for 80% of Connecticut's cases.

"Getting vaccinated can provide increased protection against COVID-19 and help prevent you from becoming very ill," Elicker said in a tweet.

All eight of Connecticut's counties had either high or substantial community transmission of COVID-19 in the week from Sunday, Aug. 1 through Saturday, Aug. 7, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This means the CDC recommends everyone, including those who are fully vaccinated, wear masks in indoor public spaces.

New Haven County one of two counties listed as having high community transmission, meaning more than 100 cases per 100,000 people were reported in the past seven days.
