The Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority announced the new area code Tuesday, NBC Connecticut reported. The change won't affect people who currently have an 860 area code, but will be used for new numbers in the region going forward.
PURA created the new 959 area code because the 860 area code has become exhausted due to a growing demand for new numbers, NBC Connecticut reports. To combat this issue, PURA approved an overlay to have the new area code in the same geographic region, according to NBC Connecticut.
Customers with the 860 area code will not be required to change their numbers or the way they make calls. Callers will still dial the area code and telephone number for local calls, and 1 plus the area code for long distance calls. Costs for calls and coverage areas won't change, and services like 911 and 411 will be unaffected, NBC Connecticut reports.
Customers should make sure that all equipment such as fax machines, Internet dial-up numbers and alarm systems recognize 959 as a valid area code. They should also make sure that stationary, checks, and personal identification tags have the new area code, if applicable.
Sherman is the only town in Fairfield County that uses the 860 area code.
