The Pendergasts have made significant contributions to their community of New Fairfield over the years. John has volunteered his time coaching many sports teams in town, including football and lacrosse, participated on various PTOs and assisted with shelter operations during many storms. He was also a volunteer fireman for many years in New Fairfield.
His wife, Amy, has also been very supportive of the youth of New Fairfield. She spent years volunteering as a cheerleading coach; for some years while she was also managing Sprinkles Ice Cream in town. In 2009, Amy became the Varsity coach for cheerleading at New Fairfield High School, and she’s still coaching.
Two years ago, John and Amy Pendergast lost their son in a tragic motorcycle accident. Upon his death, he helped more than 80 people as an organ donor.
Even at a time of tremendous grief, the family showed selflessness in holding off their son’s burial, so it wouldn't interfere with high school graduation. The family has since embarked on a "Pay it Forward" campaign, in his memory.
They will be honored as the United Way of Western Connecticut hosts its third annual Hometown Heroes Benefit Dinner at The Amber Room Colonnade in Danbury on Saturday, Feb. 27.
The honorees all distinguished themselves through philanthropy and volunteerism.
This year’s keynote speaker will be Sonia Manzano, author and actress who inspired, educated, and delighted children and families as "Maria" on "Sesame Street" for more than 30 years.
A first generation American of Latino descent, Sonia’s story is one of perseverance and courage as she overcame countless obstacles to become one of the most influential Latinas in television.
The event will include dinner and dancing, as well as silent and live auctions. The evening will be emceed by NFL stadium announcer John Heffernan. Proceeds will benefit UWWC’s work in support of ALICE families throughout Northern Fairfield and Southern Litchfield Counties.
