At Least Connecticut's Most Misspelled Word Isn't Too Embarrassing

This week is the National Spelling Bee, and Google celebrated by releasing a graphic of "America's Most Misspelled Words" for 2017.

Some of the words may come as a "surprise" — which is the most misspelled word for Montana. But none was more embarrassing than Wisconsin, where the most misspelled word is actually "Wisconsin."

The most misspelled in Connecticut — and in West Virginia — is "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," which is also the longest word on the list. It's hard to spell, and it's also a puzzle as to why so many people in the Nutmeg State and the Mountaineer State want to spell it.

And speaking of "Mary Poppins," the most misspelled word in Mississippi is "nanny." The most misspelled word in Oregon doesn't make much cents, or "sense."

"Pneumonia" and "beautiful" were the most misspelled words in four states each. Seven states had words with five or fewer letters — "liar" in Rhode Island and "gray" in Georgia were the shortest. ("Embarrassing" isn't actually the most misspelled in any state.)

Even Google isn't perfect. In its first tweet about misspelled words, Google Trends misspelled Maryland's most searched word as "Nintey" and it color-coded two states incorrectly — Colorado (tomorrow) and New Hampshire (diarrhea).

The Scripps National Spelling Bee begins Wednesday night and continues through June 4 as children as young as 8 show their mettle at spelling words much harder than these.
