According to the National Weather Service, the nor'easter will hit farther east — in Rhode Island, Cape Cod and Maine — than first forecast. But it is trending a bit west, and western Connecticut will still have to contend with snow later on Sunday — the first day of spring.
In Fairfield County, the snow is expected to hit Sunday evening, with a total accumulation of 1 to 3 inches. The National Weather Service warned it will cause slippery road conditions across the area.
There is a a slight chance of rain before 7 p.m. Sunday, then snow is likely with a low of about 25 degrees. The chance of precipitation is 70 percent in Fairfield County. With the snow continuing overnight and into the morning, it was not clear how bad road conditions would be by Monday morning for the rush-hour commute.
New London County is expected to get the worst of the storm in Connecticut, with a Winter Storm Warning in place until 10 a.m. Monday. The forecast for far eastern, coastal Connecticut calls for 4 to 8 inches of accumulations, with heavy snow at times. A Winter Storm Watch is also in effect for Tolland County and Windham County, with similar snowfall totals in the forecast.
It also looks a bit dire for central and eastern Connecticut. New Haven County, Middlesex County and Hartford County are under a Winter Weather Advisory until 10 a.m. Monday. A total of 2 to 6 inches of snow is expected, with hazardous road conditions.
Light snow could continue Monday morning, possibly causing slippery road conditions and school delays across much of the state.
Clouds will give way to sun with a high near 45 degrees by Monday afternoon, the weather service said.
Tuesday will be mostly sunny, with a more seasonable high temp near 47 degrees.
