After a rainy Saturday, black ice is expected to form on any untreated wet surfaces overnight as temperatures drop to freezing or below across Fairfield County into early Sunday. In addition, patchy dense fog will result in sudden drops in visibility and surface icing, the weather service said.
Drivers are urged to slow down and exercise great caution if traveling overnight and into early Christmas morning, the weather service said.
Late Saturday, fog and mist were reported as temperatures dipped below freezing. Early Sunday, Christmas Day, patchy dense fog will form between 4 and 5 a.m. with a low of about 25 degrees.
The fog will begin to break up at about 8 a.m., with gradually sunny skies and a high near 44 degrees. But with winds of about 10 mph, wind chill values will be between 20 and 30.
Temperatures will drop into the upper teens late Sunday.
On Monday, which is a federal holiday, there is a 20 percent chance of rain in the afternoon, with a high near 42 but with much cooler wind chill values between 10 and 20.
Showers are likely Monday after 9 p.m. as temps continue rising into the upper 40s. The chance of precipitation is 70 percent.
