There is an Air Quality Alert for 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, which means that ozone levels within the region may exceed the safe standards for people suffering from asthma or heart disease, as well as other health ailments, according to the National Weather Service.
Because of the combination of hot temperatures and high ozone levels, the Weather Service is urging all residents to avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially sensitive groups such as the elderly and those with air-quality-related illnesses.
On Friday, the heat and humidity will continue to blanket the area. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon as temperatures soar to near 90 degrees. Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain. The chance of rain is 40 percent.
There is a continued chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms before 2 a.m. Friday night, followed by patchy fog. Overnight lows should drop to about 69 degrees. The chance of rain is 50 percent.
Here's what to expect for the weekend:
- Saturday: Patchy fog before 8 a.m. But the sun will break through with a high near 91 degrees.
- Saturday night: Mostly clear, with a low of about 64 degrees.
- Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 88.
- Sunday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 68.
