Approaching Snowstorm May End Record Warmth In Bridgeport

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Record-breaking warm temperatures continued to blanket Fairfield County on Christmas Day, but the first winter storm of the year is on the horizon, the National Weather Service warns.

With high temperatures expected to soar into the mid-60s on Friday, another new record could be set. On Christmas Eve, a new record of 61 degrees was set in Bridgeport, breaking the previous record of 57 degrees set in 1990.

There is a chance of rain late  Friday. Conditions should dry out briefly for Saturday but rain could return by mid-day and continue into Sunday with high temperatures in the mid-50s across Fairfield County.

It will get a lot colder on Monday, with partly sunny skies and a high near 40 degrees. 

But a low pressure system approaching from the southwest could bring significant snow and sleet Monday night and overnight into Tuesday, the National Weather Service. 

The snow is likely after 8 p.m. Monday, mixing with sleet after 3 a.m. as temperatures drop to about 25 degrees. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Snow and sleet will continue before 9 a.m. Tuesday, with rain, snow, and sleet between 9a.m. and noon, then rain after noon with a high near 41 degrees. The chance of precipitation is 80 percent.

Any snow on the ground will be gone Wednesday, with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 50 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service, record highs set on Thursday included: 

  • Bridgeport: 61 degrees, breaking the record of 57 degrees set in 1990;
  • Central Park: 72 degrees, breaking the record of 63 set in 1990 and 1996;
  • LaGuardia Airport: 72 degrees, breaking the record of 63 set in 1990;
  • Kennedy Airport: 69 degrees, breaking the record of 58 set in 1990;
  • Islip, N.Y.: 64 degrees, breaking the record of 60 degrees set in 2014; and
  • Newark, N.J.: 71 degrees, breaking the record of 64 degrees set in 1990.

The warm temperatures on Thursday came after some heavy rains. According to the National Weather Service, totals reported for the rain from Wednesday into Thursday morning included: 

  • Westport: 1.79 inches 
  • Shelton: 1.53 inches 
  • Brookfield: 1.35 inches
  • New Canaan: 1.27 inches 
  • Danbury: 1.25 inches 
  • Stratford: 1.24 inches
  • Sikorsky Memorial Airport: 1.17 inches 
  • Bethel: 1.15 inches
