The closure will begin April 1 to allow the deteriorating bridge to be replaced, Ganim said.
Capitol Avenue will be closed for six months from Laurel Avenue to Wood Avenue. The area is off Brooklawn Avenue, near the Fairfield border.
The new bridge will have low initial and life-cycle costs, minimize the impacts to local residents, and require minimal maintenance for the city, according to Ganim.
The work includes removing the bridge to its foundation and constructing a 20-foot span that is supported on abutments located behind the existing foundation.
This work will have minimal impacts to the surrounding environment, the city said. The bridge will use concrete formliner to create a pleasing structure for the community.
A detour will take motorists around the closed bridge, using neighboring streets, during construction of the new bridge.
Local traffic will be redirected around the site by means of Cleveland Avenue on Laurel Avenue on the west and Wood Avenue on the east.
Access will be provided to all abutting property owners at all times during construction.
