World War II Era Letter In Bottle Discovered By Woman During Tropical Storm Debby
Shortly after Debby made landfall along Florida's west coast as a Category 1 hurricane earlier this month, it produced something no forecaster — or anyone else — could have predicted. Suzanne Flament Smith, age 46, of Tampa, discovered it on Wednesday, Aug. 7, in the form of a World War II-era artifact. She said she found it while collecting debris in the city of Safety Harbor. Ex-All-County HS Football, Basketball Standout From Fairfield County Dies
George Taranto, a Connecticut resident and former high school sports standout in Westchester County, has died at the age of 77. According to his obituary, Taranto, of Danbury, was a graduate of Ardsley High School and was all-county in football and basketball. He served in the United States Navy from 1963 to 1965. Taranto worked as a buyer for Bayer Aspirin in Tarrytown for more than 35 years. He also loved to hunt, fish and golf. Norwalk Man Sentenced For Defrauding Service Member Of $57K
A 35-year-old Fairfield County man has been sentenced after stealing tens of thousands of dollars from a United States service member to pay for personal expenses. Christopher Teixeira, formerly of Darien and now living in Norwalk, was sentenced in Hartford district court to six months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release, for stealing more than $57,000 from a former member of the U.S. Navy. Darien Man Admits To Stealing $57K From US Service Member To Pay For Personal Expenses
A 34-year-old local man admitted to stealing tens of thousands of dollars from a United States service member to pay for personal expenses. Darien resident Christopher Teixeira pleaded guilty in Hartford federal court to one count of wire fraud in relation to his theft of more than $57,000 from a former member of the U.S. Navy. The service member was scheduled to receive a medical severance payment from the Navy in January 2017.
