Two Purple Knights named All-Second Team in women's lax

Central Islip, N.Y.-University of Bridgeport junior midfielder Gabrielle Valela (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and freshman defender Lauren Mengel (Gilbertsville, Pa.) have been selected to the 2014 All-East Coast Conference Second Team in a vote of league coaches’ that was released on Thursday afternoon for their outstanding play throughout the course of this season.  Gabrielle and Lauren are the first two student-athletes in the four-year history of the UB women’s lacrosse program to receive All-Conference recognition.

Valela, who became the first player in Bridgeport women’s lacrosse history to notch 100-career goals on March 29, 2014 versus Molloy, finished the season as the Purple Knights’ leading scorer with 44 goals and seven assist for 51 points.

Mengel led the 2014 UB women’s lacrosse team in caused turnover with 32 and ground balls with 53 which led the East Coast Conference.  She also excelled on offense netting 12 goals and adding seven assists for 19 total points.  Lauren also scored two game-winning goals in 2014.
