Bridgeport collects 12 hits in victory over Southern Maryland

By PAUL HERRMANN Bridgeport – The Bridgeport Bluefish (4-3) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (3-4), 5-3 at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday night. The Bluefish started the scoring by plating two runs in the bottom of the first inning on five hits, including a perfect bunt single by Sean Burroughs that stopped right in front of third base.  Also picking up hits in the inning were Juan Martinez, Brandon Boggs, Luis Lopez and James Simmons. Southern Maryland then answered with two runs in the top of the third after C.J. Ziegler singled home Jermaine Mitchell and Jake Opitz. The Bluefish answered by scoring two runs in the bottom of the frame, including a Luis Rodriguez RBI single that plated Denny Almonte and on the next play, James Simmons also came around to score on a Jose Julio-Ruiz fielding error. Bridgeport added their final run in the sixth inning after Martinez doubled and then scored on a Brandon Boggs sac fly. Starter Hunter Jones (1-0) picked up the win after giving up just three hits and one earned run with three strikeouts in five innings while Blue Crabs starter Brian Baker (0-1) suffered the loss after only lasting two-and-two thirds innings while allowing nine hits and three earned runs. For the ‘Fish, leadoff hitter Martinez (2-for-4, 2B, two runs), Sean Burroughs (2-for-4, one runs), Denny Almonte (2-for-4, 2B, one run) and James Simmons (2-for-4, 2B, one run) each picked up two hits, while Brandon Boggs had  two RBI. Bridgeport and Southern Maryland will play the second game in their four-game series with Southern Maryland on Saturday night at home with first pitch at 6:05 p.m. It’s also the first Barnum Publick House Saturday of the season. Prior to the game, from 4pm – 5pm, make your way over to Barnum Publick House for a special meet-and-greet with a Bluefish player. Then bring your receipt over to the ballpark afterwards and receive a FREE ticket for each member of your dining party to Saturday’s Bluefish game. Also, following the contest, head back over to Barnum Publick House as a Bluefish player will be the guest bartender.
