Bluefish Continue TO Underwhelm

Bridgeport jumps out to early lead, but Camden rallies late to win

Bridgeport – The Bridgeport Bluefish (19-41) were defeated by the Camden Riversharks (22-39), 10-8 on Friday night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

Camden scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by Jose Julio-Ruiz, which scored Yasser Gomez. The Bluefish then answered with three runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two RBI single by Denny Almonte and an RBI single by Luis Rodriguez to take a 3-1 lead. Bridgeport added a run in the bottom of the second inning when Ramon Castro singled home James Simmons. The ‘Fish increased their lead to five with two runs in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single by Rodriguez, who then came around to score on a wild pitch.

After Camden scored three combined runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to cut the lead to two, the Bluefish added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Juan Martinez. In the top of the sixth inning, the ‘Sharks tied the game with a three run home run by Julio-Ruiz and then added the go-ahead run on an RBI triple by Alex Hudak. The Bluefish then tied the game with a run on a Denny Almonte sacrifice fly to left, which scored Prentice Redman. Camden went ahead for good with two runs in the top of the ninth inning scoring on a Bluefish error and then on an RBI single by Bryant Nelson.

Bridgeport starter D.J. Mitchell was forced to settle for a no decision going five innings allowing eight hits and four runs with four walks and four strikeouts. Bluefish closer Winston Abreu (0-4) suffered the loss allowing two runs (none earned), two hits, one walk and one strikeout. Camden starter Wes Torrez also settled for a no decision going two and one-thirds innings allowing nine hits and five earned runs with three walks and one strikeout. Riversharks closer Matt Gorgen (1-1) picked up the win going one and two-thirds innings allowing no runs, one hit, and no walks with one strikeout.

For the Bluefish, Rodriguez went 4-for-5 with two RBI’s and two runs scored.

Bridgeport and Camden will play game three of their four game series tomorrow night with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Join the Bluefish for a unique Fireworks Extravaganza at the ballpark. Watch the ‘Fish light up the opposition on the field before they light up the skies during Barnum Festival Night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard. It’s also Barnum Publick House Saturday. Prior to the game, from 4pm – 5pm, make your way over to Barnum Publick House for a special meet-and-greet with a Bluefish player. Then bring your receipt over to the ballpark afterwards and receive a FREE ticket for each member of your dining party to Saturday’s Bluefish game. Also, following the contest, head back over to Barnum Publick House as a Bluefish player will be the guest bartender.
