Bluefish begin the year on a high note, taking two games from Skeeters

Bridgeport – The Bridgeport Bluefish (3-3) swept the Sugar Land Skeeters (2-4) during a doubleheader on Opening Night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard, winning the first contest 9-2, while also taking the second game 2-1.

In the first contest, the Bluefish trailed 1-0 after Sugar Land scored the first run of the game on an RBI single by Dustin Martin in the top of the third inning. Bridgeport then quickly tied the game at one in the bottom of the  third when Juan Martinez hit a sacrifice fly to score James Simmons. The Bluefish took the lead for good in the next inning as they scored five runs with Martinez clearing the bases with a triple. Starter Tomo Ohka (1-0) picked up the win in his regular season debut for the Bluefish going four innings, allowing only one run on three hits. Sugar Land starter Matt Wright (0-2) took the loss after giving up six runs (five earned) on seven hits in four innings of work. For the ‘Fish, Simmons (3-for-3, 3 RBI, 2 runs) and J.R. Towles (3-for-3, 2 runs) each picked up three hits, while Luis Lopez (2-for-4, RBI, 2 runs) chipped in with two of his own.

In game two, both teams scored in the third inning after the Skeeters Delwyn Young hit a solo home run, which was answered by an RBI single off the bat of Bridgeport’s Sean Burroughs. Denny Almonte would break the tie in the bottom of sixth with an RBI single handing starter Michael Nix (0-1) the loss. Left-hander Scott Maine (1-0) picked up the win in relief going a perfect one-and-two-thirds innings with three strikeouts  Bluefish closer Winston Abreu picked up his second save of the season tossing a perfect seventh inning with one strikeout. Bridgeport second baseman Mike Richard was the only batter to collect a multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 with a run scored.
