The new initiative is an effort to groom the next generation of leaders and educators in healthcare; according to federal labor forecasts, the sector is expected to generate 2.3 million new jobs by 2024.

Many positions in the field are expected to require professionals with the ability to understand, adapt and apply scientific knowledge as administrators, educators and clinicians.

“There’s a need for high-functioning doctoral-trained individuals who have the ability to understand and apply science to areas of administration, teaching, research and practice,” said Al Grazia, director of the new program.

The initiative will enable students to choose between two concentrations: healthcare clinician or healthcare educator for teaching in higher education.

Both specialties are designed to equip students with skills in research-design and analysis, best practices and an understanding of qualitative and quantitative research.

Classes will run through three semesters, and are intended to be flexible for working professionals.

Depending on prior course work and scheduling, the program can be completed in 40 months.

All course work will be conducted online, except for a one-week on-campus residency in which students will both participate in a series of seminars and workshops and work with guest speakers who are leaders in the profession.
