Sens. Tony Hwang (R-Fairfield) and Ed Gomes (D-Bridgeport) got the story straight from the toddlers’ mouths when they toured an early childhood initiative run by Action for Bridgeport Community Development (ABCD).
Hwang and Gomes also met with officials at Bridgeport’s Barnum School to discuss the state’s budget deficit and Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s proposal to eliminate funding for the nonprofit, anti-poverty agency’s Bridge Together program.
The program serves nearly 300 children ranging from infants to toddlers to young children.
ADCB’s executive director, Charles Tisdale, referring to Hwang, Gomes, and Sen. Marilyn Moore (D-Bridgeport), said the agency was “grateful for their aggressive attention and concern for our early childhood program and its positive impact on young inner city children.”
Hwang said he and the other senators are working together in a bipartisan effort to craft legislation “to strengthen and financially support Connecticut’s early learning policies, improve public education, and help communities across Connecticut realize the benefits of the ABCD experience.”
“What happens in early childhood can matter for a lifetime,” he added.
“Quality early childhood education provides children with the resources needed to master developmental milestones,” Gomes said. “It is vital that we continue to support organizations like ABCD, that seek to service the needs of our state's most vulnerable residents.”
ABCD serves over 35,000 individuals in Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Monroe, Stratford, and Trumbull.
