Tuition will go up by $480 next year at Connecticut's four-year state universities and by $141 at its community colleges, the Hartford Courant reported.

The additional costs represent a 5 percent tuition increase for students at Central, Eastern, Western and Southern Connecticut state universities, while the community college amount reflects a 3.5 percent increase, according to the Hartford Courant.

The student representative on the board, Gordon Plouffe, was the only vote against the increase, said the Courant.

Since 2008, tuition and fees have risen at the state universities and community colleges at a 50 percent rate, with increases on a yearly basis as high as 10.3 percent and as low as 1.6 percent, said the Hartford Courant.

The tuition hike approved Tuesday does not include the University of Connecticut, where a tuition increase of 6.7 percent — for a total of nearly $11,200 — has already been approved.

Locally, the hikes impact Western Connecticut State University in Danbury as well as Norwalk Community College, Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport and Naugatuck Valley Community College, which has a campus in Danbury.
