Owner Harvey Robertson estimated he and his staff would probably take their shears and shavers to 30 to 40 kid clients before the afternoon was out.
“I do it to give back to the community and to take care of our children,” said Robertson, who has owned the shop since 2004.
U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy stopped by to meet some of his constituents and thank Robertson for helping the elementary and middle schoolers get their style on for the first day of classes next week.
“Every kid deserves a new haircut for the beginning of school,” said Murphy, noting the event was a reminder to families that school is just around the corner.
While his chief job is voting in Washington, D.C., he said he enjoys visiting with Connecticut residents. When one little boy didn’t look so sure about the shears, Murphy encouraged him.
“You’re gonna look sharp,” he said.
The senator declined to take a chair for a quick trim himself.
“I don’t have as much to cut as I used to,” he said with a laugh.
Ruthie Wright brought her 10-year-old son Eric Garcia and her godson, 5-year-old Brendan Allen, whose curly brown locks were the talk of the shop.
“I heard about it on Facebook,” she said. “It’s a good idea.”
