John Favret, art program coordinator at HCC, said the event was held to celebrate the school year and to promote student artists at the college, which is known for its art, graphic design and theater arts programs.
"This is kind of like a celebration of the end of the semester and also to showcase their talents as artists and performers," he said.
Enrique Silva, 20, from Fairfield, and Johan Silva, 19, of Bridgeport, created an image of an Egyptian hieroglyphic that had modern touches of a Pacman and an iPod.
The two graphic design students said it was to represent future generations looking back at the present age in the same way we look at ancient Egypt.
Sasha Cubero, 20, from Bridgeport, a second year fine arts student at the school, did a self-portrait in chalk. She said that she wants to have her own portraiture business in the future.
"You have to get to the true character of someone when you do portraits," she said.
Other students gathered on the grass to engage in swordplay - not with real swords - in an event they called May the Fourth Be With You, a play on the date and the "Star Wars" saying.
In addition to the chalk drawings, there were street performers, dancers, body sculptures, Frisbee spin art, balloon clowns and wall art. Live music was provided by bands as well.
The event was sponsored by HCC’s Center for the Arts Committee.
