First Community Health Worker Class Graduates From Bridgeport's HCC

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Twenty-six area residents graduated from Housatonic Community College’s first Community Health Worker course recently graduated.

The non-credit course prepares students for a career helping individuals, families, groups and communities to develop access to a variety of resources that include health care and social service agencies, and others that provide health insurance, food and housing. Toward this end, Community Health Workers perform a range of activities that include outreach, community education, counseling, social support and advocacy. Community Health Workers also make home visits to chronically ill patients, pregnant women, nursing mothers, individuals with high-risk health issues and the elderly. 

The graduates include Brenda Aponte, Janessa Bonano, Jaquisha Bridgeforth, Jamieca Brown, Sasha Calixte, Melissa Cardona, Melissa De Silva-Harrison, Nina Dumas, Lesette Franceschi, Ana Garcia, Robert Gayden, Lola Hailey-Kendricks, Shaneki Junes, Charmaine Lewis-Hines, Latonya McNair, Trevina McNeill, Mary Morris, Elena Padin, Dawn Stanley, Maria Suarez, Candice Turner, Xareni Valentin, and Mikieyah Williams, of Bridgeport; Richard Kiley, of Seymour; and Holly Allen and Jody Keene, of Stratford.
