Bridgeport Role Models Take School Cheer Tour On The Road

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — State Sen. Ed Gomes (D-Bridgeport) believes the difference between a good student and a gang member can come down to one thing — the positive impact of a role model on a child’s everyday life.

That’s why he and Bridgeport’s Men of Substance will kick off their annual “Good Morning Bridgeport” school tour this week at Dunbar School, where they’ll cheer on kids coming through the doors with hand shakes and high-fives.

“We have a serious problem in our city where young boys are lacking role models and mentors from their own neighborhoods who they can look up to for guidance,” Gomes said. “They’re turning to the streets because that’s the only place they feel accepted.

“But through these school greetings, and by other means, we can show our youth just how valuable they truly are to us.”

The senator and friends will be at Dunbar at 8 a.m. Aug. 31 to greet returning students.

The group will visit one school on the first Monday of every month for the rest of the school year.

“They need to see they have people in their corner,” Gomes said. “So I’m calling on all men in our community to join Good Morning Bridgeport and show our students that we care about their education, we are here to support them and we are committed to their success.”

The fall tour continues as follows: Great Oaks Charter School, 7:15 a.m., Sept. 6; Cesar Batalla School, 8:30 a.m., Oct. 2; Wilbur Cross School, 8:30 a.m., Nov. 6; and Luis Munoz Marin School, 8:30 a.m., Dec. 4.
