In a televised speech late Tuesday, Trump said, "I consider myself the presumptive nominee. ... I'm really honored by this night."
NBC News gave wins to leading Democrat Hillary Clinton in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania, while U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders was declared the winner in Rhode Island.
The race in Connecticut was unexpectedly close — with Clinton leading only 50 percent to 48 percent. The winner was called after 10:30 p.m., more than two hours after the polls had closed.
The Associated Press said Tuesday night that Clinton could lose every remaining primary and still secure the nomination.
in states with Clinton wins, Maryland had 95 delegates at stake, Connecticut had 55, Delaware had 21, and Pennsylvania had 189. In Rhode Island, 24 delegates were up for grabs. Final breakdowns of the delegates should be announced later Wednesday.
A Democrat needs 2,383 delegates to clinch the nomination. Clinton started Tuesday with 1,946 delegates, and Sanders with 1,192.Trump was a big winner in Connecticut, with 28 delegates; Maryland, with 38 delegates; Pennsylvania with 17 delegates, Delaware, with 16 delegates; and Rhode Island, with 19 delegates.
A Republican needs 1,237 delegates to secure the nomination. Before Tuesday's voting, Trump had 845 delegates, U.S. Ted Cruz of Texas had 559 and Ohio Gov. John Kasich had 148. Final breakdowns of the delegates should be announced later Wednesday.Candidates will move on to the next primary in a bid to secure the nomination.
For Democrats, remaining primaries include:
- May 3 in Indiana
- May 10 in West Virginia
- May 17 in Kentucky and Oregon
- June 7 in California, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota and South Dakota
- June 14 in Washington, D.C.
For Republicans, remaining primaries include:
- May 3 in Indiana
- May 10 in Nebraska and West Virginia
- May 17 in Oregon
- May 24 in Washington
- June 7 in California, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota.
