LePage made the comments Wednesday night at a town hall in Portland when asked what he was doing to battle the state's drug problem, noted CNN.
The full comments, as transcribed by CNN: "These aren't the people who take drugs. These are guys with the name D-Money, Smoothie, Shifty. These type of guys. They come from Connecticut and New York, they come up here, they sell their heroin, then they go back home. Incidentally, half the time they impregnate a young, white girl before they leave, which is a real sad thing because then we have another issue we've go to deal with down the road."
He apologized Friday, calling the incident "a slip up" but also accusing local reporters of twisting his words, CNN said.
