The legislation proposed by state Rep. Juan Candelaria would make it legal for adults to grow, sell and use marijuana, with some restrictions.
Proposed Bill No. 5209 calls for the general statutes to "be amended to allow marijuana use for persons 21 years of age and older, and to regulate the sale, possession, use and growth of marijuana."
Candelaria introduced a similar measure last year, but it was never raised in committee, according to the Hartford Courant.
Recreational marijuana use is legal in Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Washington and the District of Columbia, according to Mic.com.
In 2012, medicinal marijuana was legalized in Connecticut, and dispensaries opened in 2014.
The program extends to patients with prescriptions who have cancer, glaucoma, HIV or AIDs, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, intractable spasticity related to nerve damage in the spinal cord, epilepsy, cachexia, wasting syndrome, Crohn's disease or post-traumatic stress disorder.
In addition to Connecticut, medical marijuana is legal in 22 other states, including: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.
