The shootings occurred near a center for people with developmental disabilities in San Bernardino. At least 14 people were killed and 14 more wounded, according to multiple reports. Police were searching for one to three suspects at-large, reports said.

“This is yet another heartbreaking situation, and yet another day during which families are holding their breath hoping – and praying – that their loved ones are coming home," said Malloy. "And it’s our most vulnerable communities who are suffering today. Unnecessary gun violence is plaguing America, and we must step up and act to protect our neighbors, our families, and communities across the nation."

Malloy offered assistance and condolences to Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown.

“We are mourning for the San Bernardino community, for the families who lost loved ones, and those with loved ones who’ve been victimized. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families on this day and the first responders and others who will be impacted by these events. ...

“In light of today’s events, we will have enhanced State Police patrols at DDS facilities out of an abundance of caution. Our hearts are with this community tonight.”

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) also expressed his sadness.

“My heart aches for the people of San Bernardino. I cannot express the profound sadness I feel each time a new community grieves and endures the same pain that brought Newtown to its knees three years ago this month,” said Murphy. “As we await the facts from the chaos on the ground, I can only pray that America’s leaders will do something – anything – that prevents more communities from knowing this sorrow. Congress’ No. 1 responsibility is to keep our constituents safe, and not a single senator or member of Congress can go back to their state this weekend and claim that they are doing their job.”

U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty (D-5th District) spoke out against gun violence on the House.

“I am heartsick at learning that yet another American community has suffered the ravages of gun violence. We are hearing at this moment that 14 Americans lie dead in San Bernardino while at the same time the House of Representatives was yet again blocking a vote on gun safety legislation, and less than two weeks from the third anniversary of the day 20 precious children and six educators were ripped from us at Sandy Hook Elementary School," Esty said in a statement.

"My heart goes out to the families in San Bernardino whose loved ones were senselessly gunned down today. But make no mistake; we simply cannot accept this violence as the ‘new normal.’ Congress needs to truly honor the victims of this urgent public health crisis by bringing commonsense legislation to the floor for a vote. The American people deserve action, not moments of silence.”
