Jeffrey Mejias Jr. was charged with risk of injury to a child. His bond has been set at $20,000.

At 7 a.m. Sept. 12, a 911 caller said that she found a 3-year-old child in a motor vehicle on Arctic Street who had been left there overnight, police said.

She said the boy was in the vehicle, crouching in the middle section of the vehicle between the front and back seats, police said.

Police said they told her to check to see whether the car door was unlocked and to remove the child.

She removed boy from the vehicle, and held him on her porch until medics arrived, police said.

Responders included officers and medical professionals, who examined the child, police said. The child was not injured and was in good physical condition, police said.

The 3-year-old child was taken to Bridgeport Hospital.

Officers searched the car, a tan 2002 Pontiac, and found a tire iron in the front passenger seat, police said. The right front tire was also flat, police said.

Officers went the address where the vehicle is registered, police said.

The registered owner said the vehicle is used by her grandson, who lives with his girlfriend near where the vehicle was found, police said.

In visiting that address, officers found the child's mother, who was unaware that the child was not in the home, police said. She said that she had been working until 2 a.m., police said.

When she came home from work, she found her bedroom door locked, and assumed the child was in the room with her boyfriend, police said.

The mother was immediately taken to Bridgeport Hospital to see the child.

Officers began to search for the boyfriend, Mejias, police said.

As the vehicle was being towed, Mejias returned to the scene, police said. He told officers that he and the child were in the vehicle when the tire went flat, police said.

Mejias admitted that he had a lot to drink and went inside the home to get something and fell asleep in the bedroom, police said.

He was arrested on the scene without incident, police said.
