Firefighter Jimmie Jones, 34, had to be extricated from a vehicle by some of his own Ladder 6 truck mates, who performed CPR on their colleague in a valiant but unsuccessful attempt to save his life, said Av Harris, the city’s director of communications.

The accident occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. Several people with serious injuries had to be extricated from both vehicles, Harris said.

Jones, the son of a retired Bridgeport firefighter, was assigned to Truck and Ladder 6 on the East Side Battalion 2 on Central Avenue, Harris said. He was a Bridgeport firefighter for more than eight years.

Jones’ son was also in the car and sustained a broken leg, Harris said.

No other information was available on the victims Saturday evening, Harris said.

“Needless to say this is a very sad day for the Bridgeport fire department,” he said. “Mayor (Joe) Ganim joins Fire Chief (Brian) Rooney in extending deepest condolences to the family of Jimmie Jones and extend prayers for the speedy recovery of all victims of this accident.”
