At 3:30 a.m. Sunday Connecticut State Police troopers from Troop-G Bridgeport responded to the interstate's northbound exit 3 for a one-car crash and car fire, police said.

Police from New Haven also responded and extinguished the car fire. In addition, emergency medical service arrived and brought the car's driver to the hospital to be treated for a minor, said police.

The Department of Transportation was requested to sand the area after the car fire was extinguished, at which time troopers were parked behind the crash, in the left and center lanes, with their cruisers' emergency lights activated, according to police.

That's when a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer drove towards the crash scene, nearly striking a trooper before crashing into the rear end of one of the parked cruisers, police said.

Connecticut State Police Trooper John Acampora was seated in his cruiser when it was struck from behind and needed to be extricated due to the damage, according to police.

Fire department personnel had to cut the doors off the cruiser to remove the officer, said police.

Acampora sustained minor injury and was taken to the hospital and the Mercury driver, of New Haven, also received minor injury and was brought to the hospital for evaluation, according to police.

Police are investigating the crash and charges are pending against the driver, James A. Graham of New Haven, police said.
