Marisol Estrada, 43, died at Bridgeport Hospital, a spokesman for the hospital told the Courant.

Three others were hospitalized after the blaze, including the woman's 2-year-old daughter, according to the city's fire department.

“First and foremost, I want to express my deepest sympathies those who were affected by this blaze,” said Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch. “This is a tragic occurrence, and the fact that it has left a 2-year-old child in critical condition is heart wrenching.”

Firefighters made heroic efforts to carry mother and 2-year-old child to safety.

The apartment blaze was reported at 12:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they were told by a man who escaped from the apartment that his significant other and 2-year-old were trapped in the apartment. Before receiving access to their water hose lines, firefighters began rescue efforts using water cans – 5-gallon water extinguishers – to beat back the flames, followed by carrying the woman and 2-year-old from the burning apartment to safety.

"Our firefighters did an outstanding job,” said Bridgeport Fire Chief  Brian Rooney. “The rescuers didn't wait for hose lines. They encountered heavy fire inside the apartment while armed with 5-gallon water cans in a very difficult environment that left little room to move. They located the victims, carried them to the window and firefighters outside brought them down. As always, our firefighters put other people's safety ahead of their own."

The mother and 2-year-old were transported to Bridgeport Hospital. The child was later flown to Shriner's Hospital in Boston.

The child's father was listed in good condition late Sunday at Bridgeport Hospital, the Courant reported. Another person was also taken to the same hospital and later released, the report said.
