Chief Armando “AJ” Perez and Captain Mark Straubel were on routine patrol in Seaside Park Tuesday afternoon when they spotted an injured osprey on the stone wall along the road to West Beach.
The eagle-eyed officers called in Bridgeport Animal Control to gently catch the bird, which is a protected species in Connecticut.
The osprey was taken to Fairfield Veterinary Hospital, where Dr. Timothy Plunkett, a veterinarian and an avian specialist, determined the bird had no broken bones. It did, however, have several cuts and scrapes.
The osprey spent the night in Plunkett’s care and was released back where he was found, his feathers ruffled, but no worse for wear.
