According to a statement from the law enforcement agency, Vested Interest in K9s Inc. has supplied Silver with a protective vest embroidered with the statement “In Memory of K-9 Ike, Vancouver Police Department.”
K-9 Officer Ike was stabbed to death in September 2015 while chasing a man who was running from police, according to media reports, which said that a man was arrested in connection with the dog’s death.
According to Connecticut State Police, K-9 Silver will wear the vest while assigned to Trooper First Class Thomas Mitri, his handler since September 2015.
The pair is currently working in Troop G in Bridgeport, according to the statement, which said that Silver is a 2-year-old Malinois trained in all patrol functions, including tracking, building searches, evidence recovery, apprehension, obstacles and obedience.
Vested Interest in K9s, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit, has been working to protect law enforcement K-9s since 2009, according the state police, which said that the group has provided more than 2,200 protective vests valued at more than $1.9 million across all 50 U.S. states.
