During this enforcement operation, troopers are using both traditional and nontraditional state police vehicles. The enforcement project started at 12:01 a.m. Sept. 2/16 and will run through 11:59 p.m. Sept. 5.
Sobriety checkpoints and targeted DUI patrols are also in place over the entire weekend.
These State Police statistics cover the time period starting at midnight Sept. 2 to 5 p.m. Sept. 4:
- Speeding: 886
- Seatbelt violations: 89
- Other hazardous moving violations: 1,952 (includes unsafe lane change, following too closely, cellphone use, texting, etc.)
- DUI arrests: 31
- Accidents: 214 investigated, 36 with injuries and no fatalities
For comparison, here are the statistics for the entire Labor Day weekend in 2015, from Sept. 4 to Sept. 7:
- Speeding: 1,930
- Seatbelt violations: 98
- Hazardous Moving Violations: 4,132
- DUI Arrests: 45
- Accidents: 336 investigated, with 58 with injuries and three fatalities
Connecticut State Troopers also remind motorists to expect heavy traffic and exercise caution while driving over the Labor Day holiday weekend.
Police advise drivers to allow extra time to reach their destinations; not to text and drive; set GPS destinations before traveling; and use a hands-free device when talking on cellphones while operating a vehicle.
Over 35 million drivers are expected to travel across the United States this weekend, with the vast majority of them traveling by car, according to state police spokeswoman Kelly Grant.
