Garfield was born in Stamford on June 17, 1957, to Barbara and George Garfield, and was a great-great-grandson of U.S. President James Garfield.
He graduated from Darien High School, Colorado College and the University of Denver, working in commercial real estate for La Salle Partners, the Walt Disney Company, Universal Vivendi, Lightship Ventures, and Transwestern Commercial Services.
Garfield is survived by his wife. Patricia Saunders Garfield; two children, Taylor Saunders Garfield and Peter Saunders Garfield, and four siblings, Susan Garfield Bowditch of Denver, Peter Stanton Garfield of Brooklyn, Sarah Kenworthy Garfield of Leucadia, Calif.
A memorial service will be on July 11 at 11 a.m. at La Canada Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the ALS Association Golden West Chapter, Pasadena Humane Society or San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity are welcomed.
