With hurricane season upon us, Bridgeport hosts statewide emergency preparedness drill

WHAT: Hurricane drill for a category one making landfall in Connecticut WHERE: Office of Emergency Management & Homeland Security (581 North Washington Avenue Bridgeport, CT 06604) WHEN: Monday, June 22, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Bridgeport -- As hurricane season is upon us, Bridgeport's Office of Emergency Management will Connecticut will serve as the location for a statewide hurricane drill. The drill will address a scenario of a category one hurricane making landfall in Connecticut, and the test of plans will be based on the Unified Command along with Mass Care and Functional Needs Operations before, during, and after a hurricane. "We need to ensure kids and families are safe when bad weather hits Bridgeport," said Mayor Bill Finch. "That's why drills like this are so important, helping to prepare us for dealing with disasters, which we hope never come." In addition to the statewide drill, the session will also test the regions emergency management program called VEOCi. This system will allow all agencies to communicate better in times of crisis. "In an effort to ensure the City of Bridgeport is prepared for all hazards, especially now in Hurricane Season, by participating in this exercise the Mayor and his administration are ensuring that strategies are in place for saving lives and protecting property," said Scott Appleby, Director of Emergency Management for the City of Bridgeport. "We're working to ensure all residents have a plan, make an emergency kit, stay informed, and get involved. Together we can make the City the most prepared when it comes to emergencies and disasters."
