By CHUCK SADOWSKI Bridgeport - Free throws were the difference in the game, as the Caldwell College Cougars posted a 79-68 non-conference womens basketball win over the host University of Bridgeport Purple Knights on Saturday afternoon. Caldwell hit 38 of 45 from the foul; line while UB went 7 of 13. The Purple Knights lost the game to fall to 2-3 on the year despite making 10 more field goals than the Cougars and grabbing 27 offensive rebounds. With the win, Caldwell is also 2-3 on the young season.
Junior Casey Bray (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a double-double for UB scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds (seven offensive boards). Bray was joined in double-digit scoring by classmates Vanessa Schindler (Leimen, Germany), who netted a team-high 14 points, and Jennifer Kucukkaya (Sodertalje, Sweden) with 11 points.
Jennifer Anderson led Caldwell with 18 points and 14 rebounds, and teammate Alyssa James also had a double-double for the winners with 14 points and 10 boards.
The UB are next in action on Saturday, November 30 when they will look to snap a three-game losing, steak when they open 2013-14 East Coast Conference play at Dowling College. Action gets underway on Long Island at 1:00 p.m.
