Central Islip, N.Y.-University of Bridgeport womens volleyball team is well-represented on the 2013 All-East Coast Conference team as four Purple Knights earned All-ECC recognition and head coach Leo Uzcategui was chosen East Coast Conference Coach of the Year by his peers after leading Bridgeport to the ECC regular season title.
Junior hitter/setter Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) earned her third consecutive spot on the First Team All-East Coast Conference Team, and she was also recognized as the 2013 ECC Player of the Year. The multi-talented Savic, who has record four triple-doubles so far this season and was selected as the Sports Imports/AVCA National Division II Player of the Week on November 5, leads UB in assists and service aces plus is third on the team in kills per set, attack percentage and digs.
Joining Biljana on the All-ECC First team for 2013 are junior Ying Shen (Nanjing, China) and sophomore Sarah Rosa (Itajuba, Brazil). This season marks the second consecutive season Shen has earned First Team All-ECC accolades, as she leads the team in digs and is second in kills per set. A newcomer to the UB program this year, Rosa has stepped right in to a starting role in which she leads the Purple Knights in kills per set with a .286 attack percentage and is third on the squad in service aces.
Junior middle blocker Larissa Oliveira (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) rounds out the UB quartet of All-ECC selections as she earned a spot on the All-ECC Second Team for the second straight season. Olivieira leads the team and conference in attack percentage at .355, and she is also the leader in blocksThe UB volleyball team opens play in the 2013 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament at home, tonight, Friday, November 22 at 5:00 p.m. when the top-seeded Purple Knights face number four seed, Dowling College.
