Teacher Facing Medicaid Cut, Officer Suicide Top Week's News In Bridgeport

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — A quadriplegic high school teacher is facing severe Medicaid cuts that could impact his life, and the city of Bridgeport mourned a police officer who died in a suspected suicide.

In case you missed them, here are the top news stories of the week in Fairfield County, as reported by Daily Voice:

Community members are rallying behind Tom Wade , a popular teacher at Central High School in Bridgeport. Wade is quadriplegic and recently learned his income is too high to continue the Medicaid for the Working Disabled benefits he has used to pay for a personal care attendant for at least 20 years.

The Bridgeport Police Department mourned the loss of Officer Thomas Lattanzio on Monday. Lattanzio was found dead of an apparent suicide at Seaside Park on Monday morning.

The Wall Street Journal reported on something that many Fairfield County residents would agree with: that I-95 is a failure . The paper specifically called out the Connecticut stretch of the highway, pointing out that the Stamford area is the second-most congested in the country.

Two Stamford chefs competed on the Food Network show "Chopped" this week. Steve Costanzo, the chef/owner at Olio and Jean J, chef/co-owner at Soul Tasty, were both contestants on the episode, which was filmed earlier this year.

A University of Bridgeport student was killed after being struck by a car in Shelton on Tuesday. Naga Tulasi Ram Bethapudi, 27, of Waterbury was hit during a multi-vehicle crash on Bridgeport Avenue.

A commuter train hit a car that was on the tracks along the Danbury Branch in Redding on Tuesday night. There was one person in the car when it was hit, but he was not seriously injured.

Kyle Navin of Bridgeport, who has been charged with murdering his parents and burying them in a yard in Weston, has rejected a plea deal that would see him serve 60 years in prison. Navin will instead face a jury in a trial that will begin next year.

A Norwalk woman was charged with manslaughter in a hit-and-run death that occurred in September. Police said that 51-year-old Darlene Moody hit 65-year-old Archie Hilliard and drove off.

A 21-year-old Monroe man was charged with illegally firing off a gun in a residential neighborhood . Police said that Marcus Bonaparte was not even allowed to have a gun, due to previous convictions and a protective order against him.

A man hopped into a car left running in a Danbury driveway and drove away, nearly hitting the car's owner in the process. Police began a pursuit of the suspect, who is also believed to have slashed tires on other cars.

A West Haven man was charged in connection with a crash in Monroe that killed a Brookfield man in July. Police said Louis Maiorino hit a motorcycle head on, and that Dan Falls of Brookfield was thrown from the bike, dying of his injuries about six weeks later.

A pair of teenage siblings from Fairfield recently created 3Dux/Design, a line of architectural play sets for young designers. Ayana and Ethan Klein's young company got a bit of a boost when it was mentioned in Martha Stewart Living's “8 of Our Favorite American-Made Goods to Gift This Year.”
