The crash occurred at 10:48 a.m. Sunday as a DOT dump truck with a crash trailer was parked on the right-side shoulder in a working construction zone near Exit 29 on I-95 south in Bridgeport. "Road Work Ahead Fines Doubled" signs were activated.
The 4Runner was traveling in the right lane and drifted into the right shoulder when it hit the dump truck, with the driver onboard, state police said.
The truck's emergency lights and directional arrows were activated, indicating an active construction zone, state police said.
The 4Runner and the dump truck sustained heavy damage, but there were no serious injuries, state police said.
EMS and the Bridgeport Fire Department responded to the scene with Connecticut State Police.
The right shoulder, right lane and center lane of I-95 southbound were closed for an one hour while troopers from Troop G - Bridgeport investigated and the scene was cleaned up.
The operator of the 4Runner was charged with failure to obey the Connecticut move over law, distracted driving, following too closely and operating with an out of state license while being a Connecticut resident.
State Police again reminders drivers to #MOVEOVERCT for emergency vehicles and construction zones.
In the Move Over law, any driver on a highway, when approaching one or more stationary emergency vehicles located on the shoulder, lane or breakdown lane, should immediately reduce speed to a reasonable level below the posted speed limit. And if traveling in the lane adjacent to the lane containing the emergency vehicle, the driver should move over one lane if possible.
