State Police: 5 Fatalities, Heavy Traffic Reported On Connecticut Highways

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Fatalities, accidents with injuries and traffic violations rose significantly over the Christmas holiday compared to last year, with a higher traffic volume, according to the Connecticut State Police.

A total of five deaths were reported on Connecticut roadways, an increase from only one last year during the same time period. Fatal accidents were reported on:

  • Dec. 24 on Interstate 95 at Exit 68 in Old Saybrook
  • Dec. 25 on Litchfield Turnpike in Bethany
  • Dec. 25 on Route 6 in Bolton
  • Dec. 26 on Interstate 84 at Exit 58 in East Hartford
  • Dec. 27 on Interstate 91 at Exit 46 in Enfield

Here are the rest of the Connecticut State Police statistics for the traffic enforcement operation from 12:01 a.m. Dec. 23 to 11:59 p.m. Dec. 27:

  • Accidents: 461
  • Accidents with injury: 56
  • Fatalities: 5
  • Driving under the influence arrests: 40
  • Speeding: 621
  • Seatbelt violations: 36
  • Hazardous moving violations (following close, distracted driving, cellphones, etc.): 1,563

Troopers observed a higher traffic volume over the Christmas holiday, state police said.

The traffic enforcement effort will continue through Thursday, Dec. 31, New Year’s Eve, said state police.

Connecticut state troopers will continue to conduct enforcement patrols throughout the state on both highways and secondary roads.

In addition, sobriety checkpoints will be set up in an effort to deter anyone drinking and driving as the New Year’s holiday approaches.

Anyone who sees a suspected drunken driver, or dangerous driver, is asked to call 911 and immediately report it.

In 2014, there was one traffic fatality during the time period of Dec. 23 to Dec. 26; 279 accidents with injury; 19 DUI arrests, 243 speeding violations; 13 seatbelt; 706 hazardous moving violations, state police said.
