As of 9:30 p.m. Saturday, the following unofficial snowfall totals were reported:
- Monroe: 21 inches
- Trumbull: 10.5 inches
- Greenwich: 16 inches
- Fairfield: 13.5 inches
- Weston: 13 inches
- Wilton: 13 inches
- New Canaan: 12.5 inches
- Shelton: 12 inches
- Darien: 10.5 inches
- Bridgeport: 10 inches
- Danbury: 5 inches
Heavy snow with blowing and drifting will continue throughout the night due to strong winds, the National Weather Service said. Visibility will be near zero at times.
The storm was strong enough to the south for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to shut down Metro-North train service in Connecticut and New York. The last trains pulled out at about 4 p.m. Saturday. The MTA did not announce when service would be restored.
Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy urged residents to stay off the roads as the storm continued.
"The Department of Transportation currently has 543 plow trucks deployed, focused on the Fairfield County and shoreline areas," Malloy said.
"Southwestern Connecticut and towns along the shoreline are seeing the most accumulation, with travel along the I-95 corridor and the Merritt experiencing low visibility. I am encouraging those in the southern part of our state to remain off the roads if possible."
Drivers who do head out should be aware that a travel ban was issued by Gov. Andrew Cuomo due to whiteout conditions in neighboring New York State.
The full travel ban took effect at 2:30 p.m. Saturday when all state roads closed in in Westchester, Putnam and Rockland counties as well as New York City and Long Island. He also declared a State of Emergency in those areas.
