Kevin Joseph Sutherland, 24, struggled with his attacker, who had grabbed his cellphone from his waist, in the attack just before 1 p.m. Saturday, July 4, according to the Post, which cited a police arrest affidavit filed in court.
Police said Jasper Squires, who has been charged with murder, was using synthetic drugs, which can cause psychotic and violent behavior, the Post said.
After the fatal stabbing, Squires robbed two other passengers before the attack on Sutherland and another before fleeing the train at the the NoMa-Gallaudet stop, the Post said.
Squires, who attended Louisburg College, was arrested Monday after a police manhunt.
Sutherland, a graduate of Trumbull High School and a onetime intern for U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, was headed to a holiday outing with friends, the Post said. At the time of his death, Sutherland worked as a digital strategist at New Blue Interactive in Washington, D.C., a boutique digital/new media strategy firm that specializes in helping Democratic candidates and causes.
