NY Times Puts Spotlight On Bridgeport's Green Power Initiatives

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- The New York Times is highlighting the sustainable and clean energy efforts underway in Bridgeport, which is home to the largest green energy fuel cell in North America.

Dominion Bridgeport Fuel Cell began commercial operations on Dec. 27, 2013, and produces 14.9 megawatts of clean energy using an electro-chemical process that efficiently converts natural gas into electricity.

Bridgeport’s 14.9-megawatt fuel-cell complex generates enough electricity to power 15,000 of the city’s 51,000 homes, the Times said. In addition, a 1.4-megawatt fuel cell is about to go online at the University of Bridgeport, and work will start soon on a 2.8-megawatt fuel cell that will be part of a renewable energy complex on a closed landfill in the city, the story said.

How did it all happen? Mayor Bill Finch says in the Times piece that he was inspired to do more by his hero, President John F. Kennedy, who challenged the nation to send a man to the moon.
