Recipients in Fairfield County are:
- Applied Behavioral Rehabilitation Institute Inc. of Bridgeport received $30,000 for its Female Soldiers: Forgotten Heroes Nutrition Victory Program. The program is the first community-based transitional housing program in Connecticut for female veterans and their young children who are homeless. It provides nutritious meals and nutrition education to these veterans.
- Help Our Military Heroes Inc. of Easton received $25,000 for its Adaptive Van Award Program, which provides adaptive, side or rear-entry minivans to the most traumatically wounded, injured and ill active-duty service members and veterans who sustained injuries while on active duty since the start of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. The vans allow recipients, who typically are multiple amputees or suffering from spinal cord or nervous system injuries, to regain some of the mobility, independence and freedom their injuries have taken from them. The vast majority of recipients are able to drive their new minivans with state-of-the-art hand controls and other modifications.
- Workplace Inc. of Bridgeport received $20,000 for its The Daring Way for Veterans Program. The program helps veterans explore topics such as vulnerability, courage, shame and worthiness. They will examine the thoughts and behaviors that hold them back and identify new choices and practices to move toward independent living. The program provides a safe and supportive space to identify what's holding veterans back from achieving the lives they really want. Participants will learn new choices and practices that will free them to move forward more courageously and authentically in their day to day lives and independent living. The workshop curriculum will be used to help homeless veterans learn how to show up, be seen and live braver lives.
