Alcohol will not be permitted on Metro-North Railroad trains and in stations from 5 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, through noon Sunday, Dec. 13.

This is the 21st anniversary of SantaCon, which began in San Francisco in 1994. It's a gathering of people dressed as Santa and open to the public. In New York City, participants in the popular event often travel about the city, visiting bars, restaurants and events in celebration of the season. Partaking in drinking and partying is often on the agenda. More information is available at SantaCon.info.

MTA police officers will be on duty at Grand Central Terminal, Penn Station and stations throughout the region, as well as on trains to enforce this restriction. Police will confiscate alcoholic beverages and issue summonses carrying fines or imprisonment. Violators may also be subject to removal from the train or station by police.

The railroad imposes temporary bans on occasion for the safety of customers and train crews, the MTA said.
